Think Pink ~ Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Think Pink!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Save the tatas!

Ohh, how we love October. For some October means Fall and the end of Summer, for others it means Summer is quickly approaching. For some October means the beautiful colors of the trees, the falling leaves, Halloween, trick-or-treating, costumes, candy, hoodies, hot cocoa, bonfires, hayrides, and smores! Everyone has their own love and appreciation for October, for some the most important part of October is breast cancer awareness!

Breast cancer awareness month is an annual campaign to increase the awareness of breast cancer. Most people are aware of breast cancer, but many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and to encourage others to do the same, so this is an annual reminder of it! It is a reminder for us to do self-exams, have our yearly mammograms, and to remember those who are fighting the battle of breast cancer, those who have beaten and survived it, and those who we have lost from breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Does NOT Discriminate!

Another thing that many people do not know is that breast cancer does NOT discriminate! Both woman and men, young and old, black or white can develop breast cancer. Yes, you heard me right, even men can develop breast cancer! Anyone of any gender, race, age, or ethnicity can develop breast cancer. Another little-known fact is that minorities, such as African Americans, Latinos, and Asians tend to develop breast cancer earlier and often have more aggressive tumors than Caucasian women.

Now back to that little known fact of men and breast cancer. Many men are surprised to learn that they can get breast cancer, but men have breast tissue that develops in the same way that women’s do, which means they are susceptible as well! Statistics say that while men are about 100 times less likely to develop breast cancer than woman are, about 2000 men are diagnosed yearly and about 450 men die each year from breast cancer! What does this mean? Men when you are reminding your lady to do her breast exam, make sure you do one as well, and ladies make sure you remind your guy too….orrrrrrrrr…take the fun route and do an exam on each other!

Check out the National Breast Cancer Organization link for more information and a step-by-step method of doing a self-breast exam. Everyone should check this out even if you think you are doing it right.
